Von Katastrophen und ihren Bildern

Autor: Martin Scholz

Are pictures able to pass on an imagination of future? Can they pass on an imagination of future in not only the well-known manner of puffing up catastrophes, but by emphasizing the positive aspects of future changes? The living conditions of many people are changing rapidly, especially in the developing countries. Both, the material and the cultural foundation for a mutual and beneficial cooperation on this planet are decreasing. This publication enquires about the general and the special ability of pictures: the ability to escort a cultural transformation process and the ability possibly to change this transformation process into something which is considered positive. Especially the genuine picture assisted communication as well as the development of a collective visual reference frame is discussed.

Im Schatten der Utopie. Zur sozialen Wirkungsmacht von Leitbildern kultureller Transformation

Autor: Stephan Rammler

Where the paralyzing routine of the apocalyptic discourse does not produce enough internal thrust to come from knowledge to action, perhaps the idea of a positive future can entice to travel the path from imagination to the change of individual behavior and ultimately to social movement and becoming political. This article examines the effectiveness of guidelines for the design of the fundamental transformation of our modern culture. To this end, the previously little specific concept of cultural transformation is discussed, reflecting the perception and action-guiding function of future-oriented narratives, and viewed in a policy-theoretic context. It concludes with thoughts on requirements for future-oriented stories, the contexts of their development, and the methods of their ›production‹ and communication in interdisciplinary and participatory processes

Zukunftsbilder. Einige begriffliche Anmerkungen

Autor: Klaus Sachs-Hombach

The following article reflects upon the concept of images of the future. A conceptual explication is proposed in which images of the future are considered as a special kind of fictional images. The specific difference of these fictional images lies in the intended future reference. Images of the future depict future circumstances with the claim that they are to be real at a certain point of time or at least with a certain likelihood of becoming real. The herewith raised claim of insight has to be deduced from the conditions of image-use and the claim must be indicated to the observer within the communicative process.

Sternenkind. Vom Transformatorischen, Nützlichen, dem Fötus und dem blauen Planeten.

Autor: Rolf Nohr

The question of the transformative potential of images will be investigated by the example of the image of the blue earth, the fetal images by Lennard Nilsson, and pictures of the prenatal diagnosis. In an interpretation of so-called 'useful images’ driven by the methods of critical discourse theory and ideology critique the focus is placed to search for a ‘meaning surplus’ – which is a possible point to fix such an (actually impossible) transformational moment.

Vom Höhlengleichnis zum Zukunftsszenario oder wie stellt sich Zukunft dar?

Autoren: Sabine Foraita, Markus Schlegel

What exactly do we need to bring out pictures of the future?
The imagination of reality in presence and past has a significant influence on how we imagine our future. Based on a present reality we are able to imagine our future, doing so conclusions of the past will always have to be taken into account. The research project »future of habitation« is to be assigned to this point. This project attempts to generate desirable future scenarios as trendworlds.

How To Do Things With Media Images. Zur Praxis positiver Transformationen stehender Bilder.

Autor: Rolf Sachsse

The possibilities that positive transformations of an anticipatory understanding of the world by still images have, rest on the practice of using them. Base of this practice is an understanding of design that goes back to the fundamental interpretation of the word in the constitution of meaning: the use of design is more important than its production. The consequences of this proposition can be seen in the sense of a media ecology and thus lead out of the hermeneutic problems of iconology today.

Zeitmodi, Prozesszeit: Elementaria der Zeitrepräsentation im Film

Autor: Hans Jürgen Wulff

The cinematographic representation of time is based on the coexistence of different strategies of representation, additionally coordinated with different modes of reference (especially the potentiality and futurity of what is shown stands beside the dominant mode of ›it exists‹, the prime epistemic approach to the imaginary reality of cinematographic images). Film is able to record real processes and to reproduce them in a way that the perception of filmic images is similar to the perception of pre-cinematographic appearances. It has to be considered that relations of Before and After are not only part of pre-cinematographic time but also indicated and regulated by higher levels of filmic representation – inner structures of (social and dramatic) scenes, sequences and narrative structures. Secondly it can be seen that the phenomena of representing time in film are contrasted with the ›present of the viewer‹, building the framework for understanding the film text. The prime device of representing time in cinematographic structures is to follow the unit of time episode (the unity of action and interaction sequences, projects, and so on) and to represent only parts of real events following principles of relevance. Thus, the representation of time in film is based on the intentionality of the actions of characters in a film as well as on the intentionality of the act of communicating via film.

gottseidank: ich muß keine teflon-overalls tragen. mode(fotografie) und zukunft

Autor: Anna Zika

In the 1960s Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne and André Courrèges launched their „futuristic collections“ on the catwalks, without too much success in selling them to fashionable customers. Nevertheless their designs became famous as costumes for Science-Fiction-movies, e.g. Barbarella. Science-fictional narratives constitute the visual strategies of certain fashion photographs regarding accessory and setting, especially since the 1950s. Sustainable innovations are found (until now) mainly in textile technologies and the development of materials, as well as in the sphere of casual and functional wear.

Versprechen. Bilder, die Zukunft zeigen.

Autor: Martin Scholz

Pictures cannot carry out all operations language is generally able to. In this respect pictures only seem to be a limited suitable method to pass on future visions. The central thesis of this article is that at least four forms (special picture topics, negation, visualization of consequences, visual instruction manual) not only show time in a fixed-image but also develop future visually.
